Construction Remedies Act Presentation
10:00am-11:00am

On November 1st, the Construction Remedies Act will soon replace New Brunswick’s Mechanics’ Lien Act.

The new Act both clarifies and expands the rights – and the responsibilities – of owners, engineers, architects, contractors, and effectively every stakeholder, including the financial institutions with which they do business, involved in construction contracts in New Brunswick. Construction industry stakeholders are wise to begin to review, and to revise, their standard practices, processes, agreements, forms, and supplementary conditions now to ensure they are ready when the Construction Remedies Act (CRA) takes effect.

Matt Hayes will present on seven of the key changes the CRA will make to New Brunswick’s builders’ lien regime.

Energy, Carbon Emissions and Sustainability in Canadian Housing
1:30pm-2:45pm

With so many important decisions to make when building a new home, homeowners often don’t realize the positive impact energy efficient upgrades have on their life experience in the home relating to comfort, indoor air quality, health and the total cost of ownership. When considering the home’s impact on the environment, the industry is learning there is more to the picture than just energy conservation and are exploring the impact of embodied carbon in the materials homes are being built with to better understand the total emissions impact of homes.
Stefanie will provide insights into the overarching global sustainability movement and how that relates to the residential housing industry. She will explore the difference between energy efficiency and embodied carbon in housing, what it is and what role it plays in our efforts to combat climate change. She will share with us the work being done to calculate carbon emissions, examples of materials and their emissions impacts, building science impacts, and unintended consequences.

Bringing it all together, she will share tips on how to effectively communicate the invisible benefits of energy efficient low emissions homes that often compete for homeowner dollars with visible finishes like quartz countertops. Join us for this thought provoking and sales skill building session to expand our understanding and shift the conversation toward sustainability in Canadian residential housing.
