Online Basic Principles of Residential Ventilation

Through this online course, participants are introduced to the basic principles of residential ventilation. We start by defining the concept known as “House as a System”; the flow of air, heat, and water and how these impact natural ventilation (aka air leakage). Then we move on to describing the theory of mechanical airflow including air pressure, duct resistance, and fan ratings. A review of the impact on combustion appliances, humidity levels, and indoor air quality is also provided.

There are lots of visuals and periodic quizzes to reinforce the learning objectives!s.
Ongoing – Self-paced

This workshop is free for those working as a Building Official in New Brunswick.

All other participants will be charged a fee of

Residential Heat Loss Heat Gain Calculations

This 4-day course is based on the new CSA standard F-280-12 “Determining the Required Capacity of Residential Space Heating and Cooling Appliances” a nationally recognized standard that is referenced by all Canadian Building Codes. This course takes students through step-by-step calculations to help them determine the required or appropriate appliances after understanding the heat loss and heat gain in the building envelope. The calculation includes examining above and below-grade HLHG, air leakage and ventilation, and the influence that people, appliances, and window shading have on the system. The Best Part: With the successful completion of this course, participants will be recognized by municipal building officials and plan examiners for having the technical competency needed to perform residential load calculations and select the appropriate HVAC appliances.

4-Day Full National Building Code (NBC)

This 4-day workshop is a comprehensive treatment of Canada’s 2015 Objective-Based National Building Code, Part 9: The House (NBC). The NBC is recognized in most of Canada as the minimum standard for technical provisions in the design and construction of new buildings. The Code also applies to the demolition, renovation, and alterations of existing buildings. This course will guide the student through the new Objective-Based approach, providing opportunities to use the Code in practical exercises and discussions. A final exam will be administered after 2 days of study and again on the last day.

Building Officials Guide to Inspecting Air & Ground Source Heat Pumps

Geothermal, a clean, renewable energy source, is gaining in popularity among home and business owners. Through geothermal heat pumps (GHP) or ground source heat pumps (GSHP) that harness this energy, are building officials ready to inspect this equipment?

In this course, Building Officials will become familiar with operations and processes when inspecting air and ground source heat pumps. Participants will learn how earlier versions of heat pumps operated. This will lead to a discussion of what makes modern system functionality more efficient in northern climates.

National and Provincial Building Codes will be referenced, as well as, an assortment of textbooks and instructional texts related to the history and operation of heat pumps.

Building Officials taking this course will walk away with a step-by-step procedure for inspecting air and ground source heat pump equipment during a home/business inspection, including reviewing full inspection report documentation.
